Renewable Energy Potential in Indonesia Indonesia, as the largest archipelagic country in the world, has very abundant renewable energy potential. With more than 17,000 islands, diverse natural resources and a strategic geographical position, Indonesia has the ability to develop various forms of renewable energy, including hydropower, wind power, solar power and biomass. ### Hydropower Hydropower is the most significant source of renewable energy in Indonesia. With thousands of rivers and potential dams, Indonesia has a hydroelectric installation capacity estimated at more than 75,000 MW. Currently, only about 20% of this potential has been exploited. Areas with high potential, such as Sumatra and Kalimantan, show that innovation in infrastructure management and development can increase the use of this energy. ### Wind Power Wind power is a renewable energy segment that is growing in Indonesia. Located in the equatorial region, Indonesia has varying wind potential. Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara is a promising location for wind power development, with the potential to reach 60 GW. Implementation of modern wind turbines in these areas can be a clean energy alternative that provides energy to the local electricity grid. ### Solar Energy Solar energy has great potential in Indonesia, especially in areas that have high exposure to sunlight throughout the year. With around 300 days of light throughout the year, the total potential for solar power in Indonesia is estimated at 207 GW. Even though currently only around 1% is utilized, small and large scale solar panel projects are starting to emerge, opening up opportunities for people to utilize this energy source for daily needs and at the same time reducing dependence on fossil fuels. ### Biomass Biomass in Indonesia is obtained from agricultural waste, food processing residues, and forests. Biomass potential is estimated to reach more than 49 GW. The use of agricultural waste, such as straw, palm oil waste and other plant residues, can be processed into biogas or solid biomass for electricity generation. Apart from reducing waste, the use of biomass can also improve the quality of the environment and create new jobs. ### Geothermal Energy As one of the countries with the highest volcanic activity, Indonesia has enormous geothermal potential, estimated at 29 GW. Currently, more than 2,000 MW has been utilized for electricity generation. Locations on the islands of Java and Sumatra are centers of geothermal development, playing an important role in increasing the supply of clean and sustainable energy. ### Policies and Initiatives The Indonesian government has issued various policies and incentives to support the development of renewable energy. The General National Energy Plan (RUEN) targets that 23% of the total national energy mix in 2025 will come from renewable energy sources. Programs such as feed-in tariffs and public-private investment are also designed to encourage investment in this sector. ### Public Awareness Society is increasingly aware of the importance of renewable energy for environmental and economic sustainability. Knowledge about renewable energy is increasing along with educational programs and campaigns carried out by governments and non-governmental organizations. A community-based approach in renewable energy projects can empower local communities, provide better energy access, and encourage more sustainable resource management. By optimizing existing renewable energy potential, Indonesia can not only meet national energy needs but also contribute to the global goal of reducing carbon emissions and climate change.
