Poker is a betting card game where the object is to get as many chips from your opponents as possible. The game requires a variety of skills, including the ability to read opponents and predict odds, as well as the ability to keep a cool demeanor while making big bluffs.

The game is played with a standard pack of cards (some games use multiple packs and some add jokers). Each hand contains five cards, and the highest hand wins.

Usually, the cards are ranked from Ace to Jack. They are also arranged into four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs.

Royal flush is the best possible hand and can be made from a combination of king, queen, jack, and ten of any suit. When a royal flush occurs, the pot is won.

Straight flush is a straight hand containing the same suit as the first card in the hand, such as K-8-5-3-2. When a straight flush occurs, the player who holds the highest straight hand wins the pot.

Four of a kind is any hand that is a pair, three of a kind, or two pairs. If there are more than one four of a kind with the same rank, they break ties following the High Card rules.

Unless the game is played with a fixed number of players, each player “buys in” to the game by purchasing a set number of chips. The chips are usually white, but they may be other colors, such as red and blue.
